🌍 Our Community Partner: Komati Care Centre

Caring for the Children of Orlando, Komatipoort

At Needles Safari Lodge, we believe that true sustainability begins with people. That’s why we’re proud to support the Komati Care Centre (KCC) — a registered non-profit organisation (Reg. No. 296-512 NPO / SARS PBO 930030242) located in Orlando, Komatipoort.

Founded to care for homeless and unsupervised children, the Centre provides a safe, nurturing environment where children receive education, nutritious meals, and emotional support.

💛 A Story of Compassion and Growth

The Komati Care Centre began humbly — volunteers caring for vulnerable children in wooden shacks with little more than their faith and commitment. Through perseverance and community generosity, it has grown into a modern, well-run pre-school serving around 60 children between the ages of three and Grade R.

The Centre now provides:

Two balanced meals per day
Early childhood education, including music and art
Clothing and basic care where needed
Spiritual guidance from a resident pastor of the United Church of Christ the King
All staff are local community members, including a qualified pre-school teacher, three assistants and several helpers who prepare meals, clean, and maintain the garden and buildings.

🙌 Empowering the Future

KCC receives no government funding and depends entirely on the kindness of individuals and organisations. Each donation — just R400 per month per child — helps cover food, teaching materials, electricity, and modest salaries for the team that makes this work possible.

Their mission is simple yet profound:

“To provide meaning to the lives of underprivileged children through a secure, supervised environment, offering both nutritious meals and education in spiritual and worldly matters.”

With continued support, the Centre aims to expand so more children can leave the streets and enter a place of learning, care, and hope.

Needles Safari Lodge proudly contributes monthly financial support to the Komati Care Centre as part of our Fair Trade Tourism-aligned community programme.

We also donate linen, furniture, and educational materials, helping maintain a safe and stimulating space for the children.

At Needles Safari Lodge, we encourage guests to enjoy and engage with our local communities in a respectful and sensitive way. Please keep these simple guidelines in mind when interacting with local people or visiting community projects:

Cultural Etiquette

• Be respectful of local customs, beliefs, and religious practices.
• Dress modestly and appropriately when visiting villages, schools, or community centres.
• Always ask before taking photographs of people, especially children.
•Avoid offering money or gifts directly to individuals. Instead, please support recognised community projects such as the Komati Care Centre.
• Follow the lead of your guide or host when visiting community areas.
• Use greetings or phrases in siSwati if you can — locals appreciate the effort!
• Approach every encounter with curiosity, kindness, and respect.

We prioritise buying from local suppliers, support small and family-run businesses, and create sustainable employment opportunities that benefit the local economy.
